OVERVIEW

In 2022, an interior and architectural design firm contacted Greenleaf to participate in a project for the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort. The Honolulu-based firm, InForm Design, requested several preserved moss wall panels as part of a redesign of the hotel’s upscale restaurant and surrounding common areas. The design of the panels would reflect the tropical vibe of Hawaii and provide privacy for the diners.

CHALLENGES

  • The Pacific Ocean! The long distance between Hawaii and California meant every process from communication, coordination, design, approvals, shipping, delivery, and installation needed to adapt to keep the project on track and moving smoothly.
  • Timing. Specific deadlines were set to minimize hotel disruption. Installation would occur while guests were enjoying their hotel stay.
  • Logistics. Delivery and installation would involve additional planning due to the distance involved. Once the panels were designed and fabricated, they needed to be numbered, packed, crated, and shipped for arrival in Hawaii.

PROCESS

  • Open lines of communication were crucial for this project. Video conferencing, email, and phone calls were utilized almost daily to effectively keep the project on an even keel.
  • Potential plants were photographed and sent for the client to select. A combination of preserved mosses and faux succulents were chosen.
  • Panels were designed, approved, and fabricated in shop. Including the client in each step of the creative process was key to keeping the project on schedule.
  • Custom crates were designed and built to protect the preserved moss and faux succulents during shipping.
  • Additional finishing materials, tools for installation, and detailed instructions for unpacking were also included.
  • Crates were packed, loaded, and delivered to the Long Beach port with all the necessary paperwork for customs. Also, travel arrangements were scheduled for two Greenleaf technicians to be on hand for installation.

RESULTS

The moss walls tie the common areas together and provide additional privacy and sound reduction in the restaurant.

  • Moss walls are a modern solution for defining areas and boosting interior aesthetics.
  • The beauty and natural health benefits of plants enhance the hotel experience and are enjoyed by guests and staff.
  • The panels are easy to care for, long-lasting, and low-maintenance.
